The European ALARA Network

The European ALARA Network (EAN) promotes the optimisation of radiation protection (keeping exposures As Low As Reasonably Achievable – ALARA) across Europe. It brings together professionals, regulators, and stakeholders to share experience, develop guidance, and support the practical implementation of ALARA principles in various sectors, including industry, medicine, research, and the environment.

13th EAN Workshop on « ALARA and the Medical Sector »

“ALARA AND THE MEDICAL SECTOR”

Download the Conclusions of the Workshop

With increases in patient doses, associated increase in occupational exposures, development of new technologies and the occurrence of serious incidents and accidents, the radiation protection challenges are mounting in the medical sector.

The aim of the Workshop is to consider how the ALARA principle can be effectively implemented with regard to both patient and staff exposures in diagnostic and therapeutic uses of ionising radiation.

The Workshop was a platform, bringing together relevant European medical professionals, networks and other stakeholders working with the ALARA principle, to exchange practical ideas and experiences and to identify further improvements related to better implementation of the optimisation principle in the medical sector.

Working Group Topics

  1. Challenges for the optimization of patient and staff radiation protection in the medical sector
Keywords: Parameters for ALARA benchmarking, high-dose diagnostic and therapy procedures, socio-economic factors, reward systems, unnecessary exposure, etc.
  2. Policies and tools for implementing the ALARA principle in the medical sector
Keywords: Referral criteria, recommendations, standards and guidelines, audits, inspections, justification issues, DRLs, etc.
  3. Education, training and communication to improve ALARA in the medical sector
Keywords: ALARA culture, multi-disciplinary and multi-media approach, key competences, harmonization issues, exchange of knowledge, networking, etc.
  4. Technical developments and quality assurance in the implementation of the ALARA principle in the medical sector
Keyword: Effective quality control, conception of equipments, costs, evidence base for new technology, hybrid systems, justification issues etc.

Survey on radon exposure management

Between September 2009 and January 2010, EAN performed a survey on the national management of radon exposure. In total, answers from the 17 following countries were received: Armenia, Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the UK. The detailed results of this survey can be found […]

Radon exposure management

Between September 2009 and January 2010, EAN performed a survey on the national management of radon exposure. The 5 following questions were sent to the participants to the network.

  1. Is there a specific radon policy in your country?
  2. If so, when was it implemented?
  3. Have action levels (ICRP 60) or reference levels (ICRP 103) been fixed? For workplaces? For domestic dwellings?
  4. How far is this policy implemented?
  5. We would also be interested in documentations related to this policy (even if it is not in English).

In total, answers from the 17 following countries were received: Armenia, Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the UK.

Editorial – EAN is moving forward!

In a brainstorming seminar in 2009, a number of colleagues reflected on the work done and the results achieved by EAN in the last 5 years as well as on future challenges and activities.

Consensus has been achieved on the values shared by those actively involved in the network on the effectiveness of cooperation and networking to improve the practical implementation of the ALARA principle. However, there is still room for improving the dissemination of experience and for better harmonisation in radiation protection policies and practical procedures with regard to the ALARA principle.

New challenges for ALARA are emerging: ICRP is reinforcing the role of optimisation in the implementation of the radiation protection system; new initiatives to maintain the high level of competence and expertise in the radiation protection field are developing on the national, European and international level (see the report on the ETRAP Conference in this Newsletter); the practical implementation of the ALARA principle in the medical sector (see paper Ginjaume et al. on the ORAMED project), as well as in existing exposure situations, in particular for radon and NORM (see paper Wichterey et al. on the 2nd EAN NORM Workshop), is gaining momentum and is seen more and more as a priority. The same is true for developing the ALARA approach to radiation protection culture and the dissemination of the ALARA values through education and training in all sectors. New technologies are arising in different fields which need our attention, for example, the reinforced use of ionising radiation for non-medical purposes (e.g. for security purposes). Among other topics, this has been an issue which was discussed at the 12th EAN Workshop in Vienna (see Summary and recommendations in the Newsletter).
